Stoel (chaise) Monument

When leaving Middelburg on the Richmond gravel road you will find a large pepper tree on your left just before reaching the cutaway

in the road. A sign that reeds “STOEL MONUMENT” has casually been suspended from a low hanging branch of the pepper tree.

The monument is hidden from sight by the tree and passers-by will need to pull over and get out of the vehicle to have a good view

of the structure.

The “Stoel (Chair) Monument” is a tall structure fabricated by the very same dolerite rock that can be found abundantly on Ouberg koppie.

The front of the structure contains three engraved granite slabs with inscriptions reading “TER ERE VAN KOMMANDANT J. LOTTER en

P.J. WOLVAARDT WAT ALHIER GEFUSILLEER IS OP 12 - 10 - 1901 en15 - 10 - 1901 RESPEKTIEWELIK” and “WAT BETEKEN HIERDIE

KLIPPE VIR JULLE? (JOSUA 4:5.)” and a with the 3rd stone containing the image of a “riempie” chair.
