- Eastern Cape
Beneath the sandstone cliffs of the Southern Drakensberg, on the banks of the willow-lined Inxu River, lies the small town of Ugie. This sleepy little village is situated in the wild, unspoilt parts of the Eastern Cape between Elliot and Maclear.
Ugie is a quiet and a friendly town with a fair number of interesting attractions so there is no reason why Ugie shouldn’t be on your list of “places I want to see”. Visitors can enjoy visiting the Tractor Museum and Methodist Church for a little history, but it is not necessarily the history that draws people to the town. For one, there is a rather thrilling rock formation known as Gatberg - a breath-taking hole in a mountain wall, and this stunning sight will leave you speechless. For another, Ugie offers some of the best fishing conditions in the country, fly-fishing and dam fishing!
The southern slopes of the Drankenberg is the best place to be during the winter season and Ugie made history when it first snowed in the little town in the Easter Cape, so if you are visiting in winter, be prepared for very cold evenings and days with frost and snow on the surrounding mountains. The town lies close to the popular Tiffendell Ski Resort which is definitely worth the outing with family and friends.
Accommodation in the area includes self-catering cottages, guest houses, B& B’s and camping.
