Sterkspruit is a tiny rural town located just 45 km south east of Zastron, 48 km from Lady Grey and a mere 24 km from the Lesotho border.
Surrounding the small town, and typical of South Africa rural settlements, are tribal villages with each representing their own traditions and cultures – even the different languages spoken in this town are a representative of their diversity with Isixhosa, SeSotho, Afrikaans and English dominating.
The tribal villages of Sterkspruit are an inviting surprise for visitors who have travelled to the area for a great escape as they offer an unforgettable experience through tours of the region and its diverse tribal societies customs.
The mountainous scenery will also ensure a range of activities for the nature lovers. Visitors are drawn to the area for its’ beauty, fishing, access to hiking and 4X4 trails as well as the well-known Eight Passas Challenge which is home to some of the best mountain passes South African has to offer including the highest in the country, Naude’s Nek Pass and the third highest, Joubert’s Pass.
You can approach this cluster of passes from the west, Lady Grey, north, via Zastron and the Sterkspruit road or from Lesotho, via Telle Bridge border post, east Maclear and south, Elliot.
There is a range of accommodation in the area however Sterkspruit only offers one or two self-catering Guest Houses.

Climate
Sterkspruit receives approximately 691 mm of rain annually with most rainfall occurring during Summer.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 12˚C and 29˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between -1˚C and 19˚C.
Transport
There are daily flights into the Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein, approximately 226 km’s away via the R702 and R26 and into the East London Airport, approximately 411 km’s away via the N6. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.
History
Sterkpruit is an Afrikaans name which means “strong stream”. The town takes its name from the Sterkspruit, the watercourse on which it is situated.
