- Information
- Commerces & Services (5)
Luckhoff is situated on the R48 almost halfway between Bloemfontein and De Aar and approximately 47 km south of Koffiefontein.
This small town offers a lifestyle, or an overnight visit, an alternative pace – nothing is done at any great speed in this quiet farm town! Luckhoff is about as small and dusty as a Free State town can get, but it does have a few small attractions which warrants an overnight visit when travelling through this part of the country.
The beautiful stone Church is probably the towns most striking attraction, but visitors can also visit a few historical buildings which includes a 100 year old school with Ox-wagon tracks dating back to the “Groot Trek” out front. Ammunition was stored during the Anglo Boer War in the Kruithuis which is still standing today.
Hunting opportunities are also available if you are planning a whole weekend in the area and the town offers up to date basic facilities. Accommodation includes a Bed & Breakfast in town and a few other camping and lodge options in the neighbouring towns.

History
In 1892, Luckhoff was founded on the farm Koffiekuil, meaning “Coffee Pool”. A part of the farm Koffiekuil was purchased from the owner I.S. Rabie to establish the town and it was suspected that Koffiekuil was chosen because of its location near the Goemansberg.
The town was named after a famous 19th Dutch Reform Church preacher, Rev. HJ Luckhoff, Dutch Reformed minister of Fauresmith when the new congregation was formed.
On June the 14th 1894, Luckhoff was proclaimed a town in the Government Gazette and had no street lights till 1960. From 1960 to 1966 Luckhoff had gas filled street lights.
