Hennenman is a small town situated in the region known as the Free State Goldfields, just east of Welkom.
Hennenman, unlike the other towns in the vicinity is interestingly not a gold mining town. This means Hennenman is free of the gold mine towers that characterize most other towns in the district. The town instead boasts two large cement factories, a prosperous economy and friendly residents.
Not a tourist town, Hennenman’s main claim to fame is a tragic air accident, but visitors will find warm hospitality and old traditional culinary delights in this very Afrikaans town. Welkom is only a thirty-minute drive and has a host of other attractions to explore.
Despite being a small town Hennenman still offers some good guesthouses and B&B’s in the town. Further accommodation can be found in Welkom or Ventersburg.

History
Cement and a railway station marked the establishment of the town of Hennenman.
A railway whistle-stop called Ventersburg Road was first built here to serve the town of Ventersburg, 12 kilometers away. Then lime deposits were discovered near the station and two cement factories were built.
Hennenman became a place in its own right rather than just a road to somewhere else and in 1927, at a public meeting held, appropriately at the railway station, the name of town was changed in honour of Petrus Hennenman, a local farmer.
