The Northern Region of the Kruger Park is the area falling south from the Tropic of Capricorn down to the Olifants River, flanked on the east by the Lebombo Mountains.
The indigenous ever present Mopane tree in the east becomes more mixed with taller trees such as Leadwood, Apple Leaf, Jackalberry and Nyala Trees toward the west whilst pre-historic arte-facts abound in the sparse isolated hills in the west.
The Northern Region is home to half of the Kruger Park's elephants with breeding herds favouring the areas around the Olifants, the Letaba, the Shingwedzi and the Mphongolo Rivers.
Zebra and Buffalo are also fairly common presenting excellent viewing opportunities whilst Tsessebe and Ostrich abound in the open scrub-land. Their predators however are not easily spotted.
