The small town of Bronkhorstspruit lies about 50 kilometres east of Pretoria. This little farming community deserves a visit for its sheer beauty and has become a popular weekend getaway for city dwellers from Pretoria and Johannesburg.
Bronkhorstspruit offers its residents and visitors a peaceful retreat with plenty of outdoor activities for the water sport or nature enthusiasts. The nature reserves in the area offer some wonderful birding, hiking trails and mountain biking trails. Of course, the biggest attraction is the Dam and it has developed into the most productive bank angling spots in the country, especially for the bass that lurk in the thick grass along the banks of the Dam. Visitors can enjoy water activities on their boats, Jet Skies and even a bit of windsurfing takes place when the wind picks up.
Other must see attractions in the area includes the largest Buddhist Temple and seminary in Africa. Bronkhorstspruit donated land to develop the Buddhist educational and cultural complex in 1992, which now has a retreat centre and a guesthouse.

Bronkhorstspruit receives approximately 570 mm of rain annually with the majority of its’ rainfall occurring during the winter months.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 27˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 2˚C and 20˚C.
There are daily flights into O R Tambo International Airport, 98 km away via the R25. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.
Originally a railway station established in 1894, Bronkhorstspruit became a town in 1905 and was named after the river or Bronkhorst family who lived in the area. There is a lot of contention as to where the name came from. Some even say it was named after the plant Bronkors, that grew in the region of the creek.
In 1880 the town was the scene of action in the early days of the Anglo-Boer War.
