A Fascinating History

Spend a day exploring the fascinating history of Muizenberg on the Historical Muizenberg Mile. The walk is a self-guided route or if you prefer, an organised tour can be arranged through the Historical Society or Tourism Offices in Muizenburg.

This stroll through 350 years of extraordinary history begins at Surfer’s Corner at Muizenberg’s Beach. Learn about the humble beginnings of surfing in Muizenberg, hear about the life and times of Cecil Rhodes and why Yokohama was known for years as the “paper mache” house.

The walk can be as unique as you want it to be so its' duration can vary from a one and a half hour tour to a two and a half hour tour. The most popular route from Surfer’s Corner is to follow Beach Road to the Muizenberg Station, then cross under the railway to Main Street. From here turn left and you will find historical sites, one after another! The whole area's focus is on the battle of Muizenberg in 1795.

Stop in at the old Post Office building, Casa Labia, erected in 1929 as the home of Count and Countess Natale Labia, and Cecil Rhodes' Country Cottage. Opposite Baileys Cottage are the trenches used in the Battle of Muizenberg as well as the Recreational Grounds which are on the site of the old barracks erected in 1740.

The return walk can be done alongside the sea on the famous Muizenberg Catwalk, cross under the railway again at St James Station and head back with beautiful views of the ocean. If you have the time the Muizenberg Synagogue is an excellent place to end your tour, carry on along Main past the park and Bowling Club, turn left into Camp Road and you will find the Synagogue on your right.
