Little Namaqualand
Komaggas is a small, typical, Namaqualand town in the Northern Cape. It lies along the Komaggas River, a tributary of the Buffels Rivier, approximately 50 km’s north of Soebatsfontein.
Komaggas is one of a few mission stations still operating in the Namaqualand area. These stations serve as a precious part of the heritage left by intrepid people from many different countries and religions who were thoroughly dedicated to their beliefs. The first station established was that of the London Missionary Society in 1829, it was taken over by the Rhenish Missionary Society in 1843 and by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1936.
This little town tucked away between the Sandveld mountains between Springbok and Kleinzee is one of a number of Namaqualand towns, all less than an hour and half’s drive from each other, that are close to the famous Namaqualand wildflower reserves and to the remote Richtersveld National Park. It is these awe-inspiring floral displays in August and September each year and the areas rich history spanning over 2 000 years which brings most of the tourists each year!
A few quaint Guesthouse, B&B’s and even a Country Hotel can be found in the surrounding towns such as Okiep, Nabapeep and Springbok.

History
Komaggas was established in 1790 by a Jasper Cloete from the Kamiesberg area. The name is variously explained as ‘an abundance of maws of animals’ or ‘place of many wild olive-trees’. The latter is assumed to be more correct.
Much of the towns history lies in the Mission Station which was established here in 1843 by Rev. Schmelen, a Rhenish missionary, amongst 4 families, most of whom were descendants of slaves.
