Goegap Natuurreservaat, Noord-Kaap
The Goegap Nature Reserve is roughly 15km south-east of Springbok, consists of 15 000 ha of sandy plains interspersed with granite outcrops (typical Namaqualand vegetation) and incorporates the 4500 ha Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden.
This semi-desert reserve is noted for its indigenous flora and fauna, particularly succulents, and some of which are so rare, they are found nowhere else in the world.
The reserve and flower garden is transformed into a remarkable mosaic of multi-coloured wild flowers for a few weeks in spring each year, after the rains. Many of the nearly 600 plant species recorded are annuals.
The numerous mammal species found here include springbok, gemsbok, mountain zebra and a variety of small mammals, while 94 bird species have been recorded.
