Iziko Maritime Centre

The Iziko Maritime Centre can be found at the V&A waterfront in Cape Town and showcases shipping in Cape Town. It houses the earliest model of Table Bay harbour which was built by prisoners and warders of Breakwater Prison in 1885.

John H Marsh Maritime Research Centre

This centre has several collections including an incredible archive of 20 000 photos with images of 9 200 ships dating from 1820 to 1960. It also has online answering service offering information on ships and shipping, including the sale of copies of these images.

The Last Voyage of the Mendi: Death in Foreign Waters

The Mendi was a cargo ship that was converted into a troopship and in 1917 she carried a group of South African Native Labour to the war zone in France. The Mendi was in a collision with the British cargo ship Darro on 21 February 1917 and sank in 20 minutes killing 600 black troops on board. The exhibition is a monument to those brave lives lost at sea.

Colonial Archaeology

Jaco Boshoff is a Marine Archaeologist with an interest in shipwrecks and especially components of ships from the 18th Century. He is currently busy with research of the Dutch slaver Meermin that wrecked on the Cape South coast in 1766 due to a slave rebellion aboard. Jaco is also interested in in the archaeology of seal hunting and whaling.
