Cosmos Country
Hendrina lies in the heart of “Mpumalanga cosmos country” where Autumn is welcomed with a blanket of pastel and white cosmos flowers!
Hendrina is also conveniently located almost halfway between Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park and so has become quite a favoured rest stop or stop over for travellers. It is a haven of grasslands and wild flowers ideal for hiking and birdwatching. Weekend stop overs may have you enjoying nature, but if you just passing through a stop at the quaint Antique shop or the history display at the Municipality offices.
Despite being a small industrial town, the area supplies most of Southern Africa with coal and electricity, Hendrina is also a typical farming community where the pubs and restaurants are run by families who welcome tourists like long-lost friends!
Nearby towns like Belfast and Bethal offer more opportunities for fishing, hiking and birding, Waterval Boven has excellent rock climbing and waterfalls and shopaholics can get their fix a little further out at the Secunda Mall.
Accommodation in Hendrina include a few B&B’s or self-catering units for overnight and weekend stays.

Climate
Hendrina receives approximately 726 mm of rain annually with most of its annual rainfall during summer.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 12˚C and 26˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 0˚C and 22˚C.
Transport
There are daily flights into O R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg approximately 191 Km’s away along the N12 and into Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit, approximately 185 km’s away via the N4. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.
History
Hendrina and was founded in 1914 on a farm called Grasfontein. It was named after Hendrina Beukes, the wife of the owner of the farm, Gert Beukes.
This area supplies most of Southern Africa with coal and electricity. Hendrina is home to the Eskom owned Hendrina Power Station. The power station provides employment to about 1000 workers and is one of Eskoms major power stations.
Hendrina Power Station came into operation between June 1970 and December 1976. It is one of Eskom's oldest operating power stations and the only one with 10 units. When it was built, it had the longest turbine hall of any Eskom power station.
