Barrels and Beards Harvest Celebration

Cut the Bull

2019 sees the 9th instalment of this fun filled family festival! In the beginning a very talented bunch of Bot River Winemakers challenged each other to grow the most luxurious beard during the harvest. The “Shave Off” on 1 February marks the start of the harvest each year as well as the start of a new beard! Thus, began the Bot River Barrels & Beards Festival!

Only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Bot River is a well-known haven for wine. It has 14 wine farms, mostly family owned, which produce world-class wines that they invite you to come and taste test while celebrating this years’ harvest – “an event to literally let your hair down and meet the winemakers of Bot River in one festive location”.

At the end of the harvest, the now very well-bearded winemakers arrive at the annual Beard Parade, a talent show contest to showcase each beard. The contest is based on beards and bulldust, of inconsequence and almighty mirth! This is the opportunity for the public to taste the new vintage wines straight from the barrel as well as special releases from the winemakers! Plus the public can show off their very own beards and meet the winemakers themselves!

The event is hosted at the beautiful Barton Vineyards and participating farms include the Beaumont Family Wines, Thorne & Daughters, Barton, Arcangeli, Eerste Hoop, Anysbos, Gabriëlskloof, Genevieve, Goedvertrouw Wine Estate, Luddite Wines, Maremmana Estate, Momento Wines, Paardenkloof Estate, Rivendell Estate and Wildekrans Boutique Wine Estate.

The festival not only offers award winning wines and rugged men, but also scrumptious food and plenty of entertainment for all. The occasion also centres around the auction, where truly special wines are sold and the auction benefits various school-level educational projects in the region.
