The Horse Memorial, sculpted by Laura Rautenbach, can be found at the west entrance to the town of Bethulie, on the road leading out to Springfontein and Gariep Dam.

The monument, unveiled on 23 April 1982, was erected to commemorate the role the horse played in South African history. Its base of stone was mined near the D.H. Steyn Bridge.

To prevent vandalism the memorial was encased in a steel cage.
