South Africa
places you will never forget

The Dasklip Pass lies just a few kilometres north of Porterville, off the R44 where it is well signposted and therefore easy to find.

Distance 6.68 km
Gradient average 1:14
Gradient maximum 1:6
Summit 459m
Surface Gravel

Dasklip Pass was tarred a few years ago, taking away some of the excitement, but the benefits are a much safer Pass, nevertheless it’s still a narrow road and the safety barriers are just the odd large stone to warn you of the steep drop-offs to the right so travelling with caution is still advised.

This is a special Pass, popular with not only Pass enthusiasts and nature lovers, but also Paragliders and hang-gliders - at the top of Dasklip Pass is a hang-glider ramp and a cut-away for turning your vehicle. The launch is just above the road.

The ascent starts fairly gently as the road winds its’ way up the foothills. Further along the gradient varies between 1:15 and 1:10 as the Pass meanders in and out of the ravines and clings to the western side of the mountain. There are some very sharp bends on the final section, so keep your speed slow.

The glider launch ramp makes an appearance on the left and there is space to stop and have a look. The views from the crest of Dasklip Pass is simply outstanding, it's no wonder this spot is so popular with the gliding fraternity as it has exceptional beauty.
