A train hasn’t run through Zuney Station for years, but there’s a post office on the platform, in the middle of nowhere, where Sarie van der Mescht has laboured for more than 46 years. Every letter seems to have etched another line of communication on her face.
Her late husband, Dirk van der Mescht was the station porter for much of that time, but he understandably, got bored and began crafting cement statues of people and animals and painting them with tender loving care. There is one aggressive mounted Boer, perhaps two metres high, aiming his rifle at the door of Sarie’s G.P.O. One can only speculate.
