Home of the Southern Wright
Witsand is a small coastal town situated at the mouth of the Breede River, about three hours from Cape Town. It is a welcome stop on a Garden Route tour, where visitors are within easy reach of Heidelberg, Swellendam, Barrydale, Montagu and the Robertson Wine Route before moving onto the greater Garden Route area.
The St Sebastian Bay area is relatively solitary apart from the little seaside villages of Witsand and Infanta, which means these little towns have much to boast about – St Sebastian Bay is known as THE whale nursery of Southern Africa! The Bay is the best land-based vantage point from which to view these gentle giants of the sea and Witsand regards itself as the true home of the southern right whale. The best time to visit for the best whale watching opportunities is between June and October each year.
Witsand is a peaceful place to simply relax and unwind, the locals are friendly, and the village is surrounded by magnificent species of Cape Fynbos and 4 km of white sandy beaches. Visitors will also appreciate the historical value of Witsand, the town has a few old buildings left over from when the town was a busy port.
This delightful holiday destination offers various accommodation options from Guesthouses and self-catering units to caravaning and camping at the Kraaltjie caravan park and recreational centre.

History
Witsand began as a bustling port town, In the 1800s the Witsand harbour was bursting with steamboats bound for Cape Town.
Over the years, various people built accommodation, shops and warehouses along the Breede River and so the village of White Sands, near Port Beaufort, was laid out on that part of the farm Westfield called White Sands held by Benjamin and D.D. Moodie. White Sands was proclaimed a township in 1909.
Joseph Barry, and the Barry family, were important merchants living in the area of Port Beaufort and Witsand and were therefore very influential in the development of the town.
