The Orange River's fertile valleys with its proud-standing lush green vineyards in the Northern Cape Province are the playing grounds for the prestigious Northern Cape Vintners with the Orange River Wine Cellars’ head office located in Upington.

Six wineries have been established in Kakamas, Keimoes, Upington, Grootdrink, Groblershoop and recently the faraway Hartswater; while grape juice cellars operate from Kakamas and Grootdrink. These wine farms are the most northerly in the Cape and the area is the 4th largest wine producing area.

Only three percent of the vineyards along the Orange River Wine Route comprise red grape varieties. Nevertheless, winemakers are focusing on creating red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Ruby Cabernet, Pinotage, and Petit Verdot grapes.

The area offers an extensive range of dry whites, natural sweets and dry reds, as well as dessert wines. These wines are successfully marketed both locally and internationally, and are enjoyed by many wine lovers.
