Richmond in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa is situated 38 km south east of Pietermaritzburg.
Situated in the picturesque hills in the Natal Midlands, Richmond rests alongside the Illovo River. Dairy, surgar and livestock farms are surrounded by timber plantations and this is what the town is known for. The Old Court House, now also known as Heritage House is used as the towns Publicity & Information House and stands as a reminder of the early settlers in 1850. The jail cells are used by entrepreneurs to sell their crafts to visitors and if its history you looking for then a trip to Blarney Cottage is a must! Now a national monument, Blarney Cottage is the last remaining settlers’ home still standing, unchanged and with its residents names still visible in the bricks of the cottage walls.
Visiting this area usually means time at a nature reserve or game farm relaxing and spending your time hiking, fishing, birdwatching and taking in the beautiful scenery.

Climate
Richmond has most of its rainfall during the mid-summer months, December and January.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 29˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 4˚C and 19˚C.
Transport
There are Domestic and International flights into Durban’s King Shaka Airport on a daily basis. Richmond is approximately an hour and a half drive from Durban, along the N3 and using the R52 road near Camperdown.
Car rental companies are available for self-drive trips into the midlands area.

March – Transfari Festival: 3 day Psychedelic Adventure and Underground Dance Festival near Ashburton Private Nature Reserve.
More festivals can be attended in the surrounding areas of Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
History
The town of Richmond, originally called Beauliu-on-Illovo, was established in 1850 by British Byrne Settlers. They were from Beauliu in Richmond, North Yorkshire. The name changed to Richmond for ease of pronunciation.
Joseph Baynes, a Yorkshireman by birth, became one of Natal’s greatest tycoons after he established the dairy industry in the area. His Baynesfield Estate was bequeathed to the nation of South Africa in his Will.
