Pretoria’s Favourite Landmark!
The Union Buildings are situated in the city of Pretoria in Gauteng, South Africa.
The buildings are a National Heritage Site housing the offices of the President of South Africa and act as the seat of the South African Government. Towering over Pretoria from the top of Meintjieskop, visitors have uninterrupted views of Pretoria’s skyscrapers, the city’s Jacaranda lined suburbs and two other landmarks on the opposite hills, the Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park.
The buildings were designed by architect Sir Herbert Baker and construction began in 1910, taking three years to complete and was the largest building in South Africa at the time. The buildings are 275 metres long and the Amphitheatre that connects the two wings was built to represent the union of the different governments at the time.
The Union Buildings have also provided a spectacular backdrop to many special events such as Freedom Day Celebrations, Presidential inaugurations and it is where thousands of people came to pay their last respects to Nelson Mandela.
As one of Pretoria’s most visited attractions, the Union Buildings are a “must see” for anyone passing through the city.

Public Gardens are open daily between 05h00 and 23h00, no admission fee is charged.
Pretoria experiences its rainfall in the summer months, with December and January seeing the highest levels.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 14˚C and 28˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 3˚C and 21˚C.
There are Domestic and International flights into Johannesburg’s O R Tambo Airport and Lanseria Airport on a daily basis. Bus services, the Gautrain, taxis and car rental companies are available for easy access around the area.
