History

The airport was founded in 1929 by Colonel Miller who initially needed an airfield to operate his postal service from the city to Cape Town. It was formally opened nine years later with one runway, I hanger and a concrete apron. Construction on the permanent terminal buildings began in 1950 and the new and improved building was opened in 1955. By 1973 the apron was extended to accommodate larger aircraft and a new terminal building opened in 1980. This airport formally known as H. F. Verwoerd served the city until 2000 when plans for the major terminal upgrades were drawn.
