The Afrikaans Language Museum is situated in the heart of Paarl, on the banks of the Berg River, roughly 50 kilometres north-east of Cape Town, in the former house of Gideon Malherbe, one of the founders of die Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (GRA) (Association of True Afrikaners).

In this interesting and educational tourist attraction, the history of Afrikaans and the characters who played a major part in it’s development truly come alive.

It’s not just the wallpaper that will intrigue you in this partially restored historical building; original furniture from the 19th century will take you back to the era of secret meetings and families with 16 children.

The Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (Association of True Afrikaners) was established in this house on 14 August 1875 and the museum is home to the printing press on which ‘Die Afrikaanse Patriot’, the first Afrikaans newspaper in the world, was printed.

To complete your experience, combine your visit with an outing to the Afrikaans Language Monument which is situated on the Paarl Mountains on the outskirts of town.
