Oudtshoorn is known as the home of the Ostrich and for its unique landscape. Being part of the Karoo, there are vast expanses of veld, magnificent mountain ranges and plenty of valley and gorges. The Gamkaberg Nature Reserve lies in the heart of this incredible beauty.
The Reserve was established in 1974 to help conserve a small herd of endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and through focused conservation initiatives the herd of 5 grew substantially. Today the reserve is ideally suited to those seeking peace and tranquility and a place to enjoy the outdoors. It offers some of the gorgeous Klein Karoo vegetation, an abundance of flora and a number of local bird species.
The reserve also offers a variety of hiking trails and 4 x 4 trails to choose from. Hikers can expect some fairly rough terrain, but not without some spectacular viewpoints. Options include day trails and one overnight trail and hikers should be prepared for unpredictable weather as the area can experience high temperatures in the summer and can get very cold in winter.
If you have a 4 x 4 vehicle, there are two 4 x 4 routes on offer. The 32 km route will take approximately five hours and there are picnic and braai spots along the way. There are a few steep uphills and downhills, but all on stable surfaces. The route is not technical and fairly easy to drive.
