Described as a small country town, Nuwerus lies between Garies in the north and Vanrhynsdorp along the Cape West Coast. It is situated within an area known as the Hardeveld, a portion of the Succulent Karoo Biome, very rich in endemic plants.
The smallness of the town is actually its real appeal and the tone is decidedly traditional. It can list its facilities in a few words, namely a post office, police station, ATM and a convenience store. This does not however detract from a few good reasons to visit Nuwerus and visitors here can enjoy true hospitality with outdoor attractions such as hiking, mountain biking, star gazing and of course the most popular attraction of exploring the Cape Flower Route during season.
Nuwerus is home to some attractive examples of Victorian architecture and boasts the only complete corrugated iron house in the country. The beautiful old Dutch Reformed Church is also worth a visit. The ideal way to view the buildings is simply to start walking from the entrance of the village zigzagging through the streets, about an hour’s walk. This way you can also experience the rural quality of the village, you will find horses, sheep, geese and chickens in a number of little paddocks at the back of houses. The local people are friendly and will gladly answer your questions if engaged.
Accommodation in Nuwerus and surrounding areas includes Guest Lodges and Self-catering units.

History
The name Nuwerus is Afrikaans and means “new rest”.
The town came into being as a stop off for postal deliveries. Travelling from Vanrhynsdorp to Garies was just too far to manage on one set of horses. A halfway house, with a rather unusual name of Aardvarkgat (Ant eaters hole), was established. At the same time this little halfway house gave the riders an opportunity to rest and so the name change to Nuwerus made sense.
