Kanonkop View Point

For an overview of Montagu one should really not miss Kanonkop. Take a picnic basket with and if the main gate is open, you will be able to drive right up to this beautiful vista over Montagu West and the Langeberg Mountains.  Should the main gate be locked you can still access the view point by using the pedestrian gate and walking the 400m.

The view site is an excellent spot to contemplate how great God is, to take those special occasion pictures or just to sit and meditate. It gets its name from the fact that there used to be canon emplacements on the hill at one stage. Currently an old ship's cannon can be seen on the hill. The small white building used to be the magazine for the town.

Please note : no dogs allowed.

The story goes that the original cannon which stood on this spot and dated from the 1800 was used at some stage for a salute of honour which went horribly wrong and caused a young man from the town to lose both his arms.  The farmers then pushed the cannon over the edge of the hill.  20 years later it was retrieved to be fired again, but this time the whole cannon exploded and its spot stood empty until it was replaced by the present one.   This cannon was taken out of the sea in Simon's Town in 1988 after spending over 200 years on the ocean floor.
