Land of the Ancient Tribe
Wedged between two borders, the west of Namibia and the east of Botswana, is the municipality of Mier. A municipality larger than that of the Free State Province and includes the communities of Rietfontein, Philandersbron, Loubos, Klein Mier, Groot Mier, Welkom, Askham and Noenieput.
This large pristine southern Kalahari wilderness area boasts dunes averaging 35 metres in height and offers unforgettable and breathtaking scenic sights. This is the land of one of the worlds mot ancient tribes, the !Khomani San. The San still own farms in the Mier area. Members of the !Khomani San produce and sell authentic San weapons like bow and arrow and curios like beads made out of the shell of ostrich eggs or bags made out of animal skins. One of the greatest and biggest assets of Mier is the rich culture and history of its people – here visitors can spend time taking donkey cart tours and camel rides in-between a bit of sand surfing!
Mier lies adjacent to one of the world’s largest conservation areas, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and is a paradise for various raptors which can be seen nesting in the giant camel thorn trees. The area is also a hunter’s dream space with 30 000 hectares of game farms which offer hunting opportunities.
Accommodation includes a Bed & Breakfast, Guesthouses, Game Farms and camping and caravan facilities.

History
The story behind the town name is that some very exhausted Scouts of the Pioneer Dirk Vilander, while resting, noticed ants bring wet mud to the surface of the ground. Curious they dug and found water – to honour the ant, they named the settlement Mier, the Afrikaans word for “ant”.
Mier is home to the history of two prominent Pioneers, Dirk Vilander and Regopstaan Kruiper and most of their descendants still live in Mier.
