The Flood Route takes visitors through the small town of Laingsburg in the Karoo, where a major flood in January 1981 caused devastation for the entire sleepy town and its inhabitants.

Visitors can relive the day of the devastating disaster by walking or driving the route through town to learn what happened in each area and what the picturesque town looked like before the natural disaster.

The route starts at the Laingsburg Flood Museum and Tourism Office and takes a tour through the town guided by description notice boards or a tourist guide. The notice boards are very informative and the route passes some of the most devastated areas and old historic buildings in the town. Visit the old Lutheran Church founded in 1833, the towns first school and the uniquely designed community centre. A highlight of the route is the railway bridge painted with the “Karoo Rainbow” depicting hope after the disaster.

The circular route ends again at the Museum where visitors can view the documentary on the flood or purchase the DVD. The complex has a wonderful curio shop and coffee shop where tasty treats and a refreshing drink can be had after the tour.
