Travelling from the south end of the Pass means starting where the R352 meets the R63 and heading north into Keiskammahoek and then on to Dontsa Pass toward Stutterheim. The Red Hill Pass is only just a little over 8 km, but if you have the time including a few other attractions allows for a much better drive in the country! Travelling the Pass from the opposite direction, head north out of Stutterheim, turn left onto the R352, this is a longer 36 km route, but offers exceptional scenery via the Gugu Dam and the Dontsa Pass, into the village of Keiskammhoek.
Red Hill Pass is a fairly safe pass in fine weather, but it is subject to mist and heavy rainfall and it is advisable to keep an eye out for stray cattle. There are a total of 23 bends, corners and curves to negotiate, three of them which are in excess of 90 degrees so stick to the speed limit and enjoy the drive!
Make sure to stop at the village of Keiskammahoek which is well worth a stop to sample some of the local delicacies and also the 1930's architecture
