The Oldest Town on the West Coast
The small town of Hopefield lies halfway between Malmesbury and Vredenburg on the R45. Fast becoming a popular tourist destination because of its multicoloured tapestry of wild flowers and unique fynbos in the area, Hopefield has been hosting its own annual flower show for its regular visitors.
Hopefiled’s other claim to fame is that it is the oldest town on the West Coast and because of this has an old world atmosphere that takes its visitors back in time and offers a few hidden treasures to explore and experience. A few musts are the Dutch Reformed Church, the Fossil Farm and the two historical Cape Dutch Houses on the outskirts of town, Langrietvlei and Coenradenburg, which have been declared National Monuments.
Beside the old world charm and the historical value of the this quaint town, it is also the sheer beauty of the Berg River, the valleys, big sky and stunning sunsets and the sea just a short way down the road that makes it so attractive. There are comfortable guest houses and self-catering units just outside the town that will satisfy all types of travellers touring the gorgeous Cape West Coast.

History
The area was previously a farm called Lange Kuil and was owned by Mr. P Kotze. It was first established as a town in 1844 and named Zoute River after the small river that ran through the town. It was first developed as a church community and later in 1853 renamed Hopefield after two gentlemen, Mr. Hope and Mr. Field who laid out the town.
Travellers had to drive through Hopefield to reach Saldanha and the little town grew quite nicely as business was good, but after the new West Coast road was built the small town was bypassed and businesses started to stagnate. Today it is the veldflowers surrounding the town that attracts its visitors!
