Grotto Beach is one of the most striking South African beaches, set in the coastal town of Hermanus, about an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town. The beach is the largest in the town, but only makes up a small expanse of along the coastline of beach here that stretches for over 18 km’s.
Hermanus boasts two Blue Flag beaches of which Grotto Beach is one, the other being Hawston, which means visitors can expect a clean and well cared for environment, changing facilities and lifeguards on the beach. Other facilities include an interpretive education centre where members of the public can get information on local environmental issues and what Blue Flag status means.
Grotto Beach is a typical Southern Cape sandy beach with good waves and predominantly pleasantly warm water. It is bordered by mountains and indigenous plant life on one side and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean on the other and the most popular beach in the area with locals and holiday makers. There’s plenty of space for any sized crowd and the parking winds along the road for easy access along several designated pathways. The beach is excellent for swimming, surfing and well suited to families with kids.
Grotto Beach is also perfect for families with fur kids and makes an excellent location to take the dogs for a walk. If you are feeling energetic you can take the approximate 18 km walk from Grotto Beach all along the coastline to nearby De Kelders. The views are breath-taking and in season you may spot a few whales along the way!

The beach can be reached by driving through the town of Hermanus on the R43 (7th Street) and around a traffic circle, where it is signposted.
