The Garden Route Botanical Gardens are situated in George in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Bordering the Garden Route Botanical Gardens are mountain forests and the Outeniqua Nature Reserve and the southern parts of the gardens have two wetland areas which water-loving plants, fynbos and trees. There are various garden areas that include a welcome garden, succulent garden, medical plants and pioneer forest. The gardens provide a wonderful space to just rest, bird watch and study the flora.

Some visitors may be looking for more than just the peace and tranquility of the gardens and for these active guests there are guided walks, hiking trails and access to mountain bike trails. The gardens are also a very popular spot for photography enthusiasts and treasure hunters who participate in the popular Geocaching, an outdoor game using GPS-enabled devices. The tea garden and playground area provide a shady spot under a giant Cape Fig Tree where the hungry or just social can meet for breakfast or lunch.

Besides offering the residence and visitors of the Garden Route a beautiful venue for outdoor activities and relaxation, the Gardens also play a very important role in the conservation of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the most threatened floral kingdom in the world. It has established and maintains an indigenous garden and environmental centre for educational, research, training and conservational purposes.

A nominal Entrance Fee is charged. Please contact the Gardens directly for confirmation on pricing.

Climate

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 28˚C with high rainfall in March and October.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 7˚C and 21˚C with the lowest rainfall in June.

Transport

Commercial Airlines offer flights into George Airport. Car hire facilities are located at the Airports. Johannesburg is about 1 170 km by road, approximately an eleven hour drive, but Cape Town is just a mere 410 km to George. 

Please note that between September and April the Gardens open at 07h00 and close at 19h00. The Nursery is open Monday to Friday, but only every first Saturday of the month from 09h00 to 12h00.
