Carletonville is situated only 80 km’s west of Johannesburg, in one of the richest gold producing parts of the world. At 3,749 m, Western Deep Levels is one of the world's deepest mines.
The mining town lies just off the N12 Treasure Route that runs from the North West Province, through the goldfields, to the Northern Cape. The route is an exciting tourism development, created to bring a range of wildlife, cultural, scenic, industrial, and eco attractions to travellers. Driving through the goldfields section makes it easy to see how the sheer number of gold mines have deemed this region to be a South African treasure - Carletonville alone has no fewer than seven mines surrounding the town!
Carletonville is not only all about industry, the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve lies on the outskirts of the town, providing a tranquil sanctuary of grassland and wetland which is home to around 60 species of birds, including the greater and lesser flamingo, crake, swamp hen, heron, the African fish eagle, and korhaan. It is a wonderful spot for bird watching and day visitors can enjoy relaxing at a number of shady picnic spots.
Despite not having too many attractions of its own, Carletonville is within driving distance of Johannesburg and the Magaliesburg, which both offer a host of attractions and activities for all ages.
Carletonville and the surrounding area offers a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets from Hotels, B&B’s and Guest houses to self-catering and camping and caravan parks.

Carletonville was originally an unplanned settlement which only became established between 1937 and 1957 as various companies developed their gold-mining claims. The town was named after the long serving mining director of Consolidated Gold Fields, Guy Carleton Jones, was not officially incorporated until 1959.
The Elandskraal mine, site of a 3 October 2007 collapse, is located in Carletonville.
