The agricultural and salt-producing centre of Boshof, founded in 1858 on the Vanwyksvlei farm, was named after Jacobus Boshof, second president of the then Orange Free State.
The main farming activities are sheep, cattle and game and the area produces the finest red meat in the country with the renowned Bonsmara, Brangus, Boergoat and White Dorper stud-breeders ensconsed here.
Boshof is the administrative centre of The Goldfields region of the Free State.
There are gypsum mines in the district and the diamond mines which were shut down for a period of time, are now being reopened.
