A four kilometer bush-covered ridge which provides the land-locked harbour of Port Natal, renamed Durban, with its southern arm is known as the Bluff, or to the Zulus as isiBubulungu, meaning 'the long bulky thing'.
The Bluff comprises of several suburbs and has the finest bathing, fishing and surfing beaches in the area. It is a popular holiday spot for those 'in the know'. Much of the accommodation establishments overlook the Indian Ocean where dolphins frolic close to shore all year round and where in winter, whales are often spotted.
The Bluff is Durban’s most prominent natural landmark; the ridge is actually a 90m high dune of silt and sand, laid down long ago when the sea level was higher. The ridge provides the harbour with a landfall and protection from south-easterly winds.
In former years crews of several wrecked ships found sanctuary on the Bluff and during the Zulu disturbance of the early 1820's many refugees from shattered clans fled there. Its bush was difficult to penetrate; mangrove swamps, bogs and the waters of the harbour blocked approach from the land and the sea guarded its eastern side.
Lieutenant James King, one of the pioneer traders and founders of Durban had his home on the Bluff. He lived there with his following of hunters and dependants until his death on 7 September 1828. A plaque marks his grave.
The Bluff today is largely a residential area. Marine Drive runs along the seaward side and leads to a viewing site on the eastern end. From here there is a panorama of the harbour and city. Other attractions are its golf course and yacht club.
Ocean View is one of the Bluff's seven coastal suburbs, with superb views over the warm Indian Ocean. Dolphins and whales can often be spotted frolicking in the azure waters and this suburb is popular for its lovely swimming and surfing beach. Real…Meer
