Rietbron, Eastern Cape
In the Middle of Nowhere
Rietbron is a tiny town almost halfway between Beaufort West and Willowmore – a true “Karoo dorp” of everyone’s imagination in the middle of nowhere.
There may be a number of roads which lead to Rietbron, but none of them are main roads and all are gravel. Travelling to this little town is a conscious decision where you will find a genuine Karoo town with its main attribute being the friendly people who live there and a settlement that provides only the most basic needs of its farming community.
Rietbron has pride of place though as only one of three towns which forms part of the Baviaans area and serves as the gateway to the Bavianskloof Wilderness Area – a World Heritage Site and outdoor enthusiasts adventure destination.
In Rietbron the pace is slow, the night sky filled with stars and your stay here is guaranteed to be relaxed and peaceful where you can once again appreciate the little things in life.
The Hope Cottage offers self-catering accommodation, other accommodation in lodges and guesthouses can be found in the surrounding area.

History
Rietbron has its origin in a patch of reeds and the village was born with the Afrikaans name derived directly from the water source in this patch of reeds, which is a direct translation of the name Rietbron.
The farm, Kaalplaas, despite immense water scarcity, was declared an urban area in 1909. It was observed that a nearby reed-bush (known as “rietbos” in Afrikaans) produced a sustainable damp spot in the soil. A well was dug and a very strong and shallow underground water source was discovered - hence, the source (translated ‘Bron’ in Afrikaans), of Rietbron’s name.
Water from the source flowed into Paddadam (Frog Dam), from which many farmlands and orchards were irrigated.
The village was established in 1910 with the decision of the NG Kerk in Willowmore to establish a new parish for the residents of the far-flung "vlaktes" north-west of Willowmore. In 1913 a new congregation was established and in 1918 the title deed for the Dutch Reformed Church was handed over to the Rietbron congregants.
