Kraaifontein, Western Cape

Kraaifontein is one of Cape Town’s northern suburbs, about 25 minutes outside of the city centre, and flanks the N1 toward Paarl and Worcester.

For years Kraaifontein was regarded as the “ugly sister” to its neighbours Brackenfell and Durbanville, but this perception has changed dramatically in the last few years. Its easy access to the N1 and to a multitude of attractions in Stellenbosch, Paarl and the city centre has made Kraaifontein a wonderful base from which to explore the city and the winelands!

Kraaifontein boasts the biggest playground in the Western Cape, Bugz Playground, open for kiddies’ fun rain or shine and for older persons outdoor fun, Cool Running Tobogganing isn’t far away either. Enjoy shopping, wine tasting and theatre all on the doorstep of this beautiful suburb!

Climate

Kraaifontein receives approximately 659 mm of rain annually with the majority of its rainfall occurring during the winter months.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 25˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 6˚C and 17˚C.

Transport

There are daily flights into Cape Town International Airport approximately 30 km away travelling along the R300. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.

History

In 1869 sub-division of farm land started in the area, by 1876 a railway station was formed called "Kraaifontein Junction" and in 1877 formal town development started. The first school opened in January 1908 and the Dutch Reformed Church was founded in 1948. In the same year Kraaifontein got its own local authority.
