South of Port Shepstone the river known as Vungu (from the Zulu word describing the sound of the waterfall or the wind in the gorge near its mouth) flows into a lagoon in a sheltred bay. Here among the wild banana and lala palms lies the village of Uvongo.
Uvongo is a lively seaside holiday village renowned for its waterfall which flows into a small gorge and its large rock escarpments covered with beautiful, dense foliage sheltering its beautiful beach. A footpath runs alongside the river, which flows to the Uvongo River Nature Reserve.
Visitors to Uvongo are not far from the Shelly Centre, a modern shopping mall and the busy night life of Margate with its many restaurants and pubs.
On Saturdays there is the Uvongo Flea Market where you can buy anything from toys, CDs and clothing to fresh vegetables and tasty pancakes.
