History
Settlers who were attracted to the Overberg began searching for new land to farm in the early 1700’s. The area around Barrydale proved to be perfect because of its fertile soil and ample supply of water.
Farmers found it difficult travelling through Tradouw Poort as it proved too steep for a wagon route and the trip via Cogman’s Kloof was too time-consuming. It was therefore decided, in 1867, to build a road through the Langeberg Mountains, linkingSwellendamwith the now village known as Barrydale.
In time the farmers living along the Tradouw Pass, decided they wanted their own church and chose the spot where the R62 and the R324 meet and thus the village of Barrydale owes its existence to both a Church and a Crossroads.
