A Unique Gem of a Garden

Lying on the outskirts of Worcester lies the unique Karoo Desert National Botanical Gardens. The 154 hectare Garden lies at the foot of the Hex River Mountain range, 120 km north of Cape Town. Only 11 hectares are cultivated and the remaining 143 hectares are comprised of natural vegetation.

A unique gem of a garden, the Karoo Desert National Botanical Gardens is the only truly succulent garden in the southern hemisphere. Guided torus of the succulent collection are offered by appointment.

Within the natural area are two very popular hiking trails, the Shale Trail and the Grysbokkie Trail and the most popular time to visit the gardens are between end June and end September annually, due to the winter rainfall which promises a colourful display of annuals and vygies! This area of the Garden is also home to several interesting species of wildlife such as Dassie’s, mongoose, caracal, grysbok and many more!

The Desert Bird Trail is a definite for bird lovers, 95 bird species have so far been identified in the Garden. There are storyboards along the trail which covers various related topics such as feather and flight, gardening for birds and how climate change affects arid zone birds.
