- Commerces & Services (11)
Wolmaransstad is situated in the North West Province, almost halfway between Johannesburg, the City of Gold, and Kimberley, home to the Big Hole – and for this reason it forms part of the N12 Treasure Route!
This small town has proven to be especially ideal for agriculture and as a result is a successful maize farming town. The hot summers (up to 40 degrees Celsius) and cold winters (below 0 degrees) are also ideal for cattle farming.
Wolmaransstad lies in the valley of the Makwassie stream where diamond digging is one of the most important activities. The town is therefore an important diamond buying centre, in fact, buyers visit this town regularly to buy uncut diamonds on auction at the Diamond Exchange. The Diggers Diamond Route is a must when visiting and takes visitors back to the discovery of diamonds in the region, the establishment of the mines and the subsequent diamond rush.
Other attractions include a Nature Reserve for hiking, birdwatching, fishing and other outdoor activities as well as various sandstone buildings, in particular, the Thomas Leask House, a trading store that boasted guests like South African President Paul Kruger.
Wolmaransstad has a variety of B & B’s and Guest Houses in town as well as a Game or Hunting Lodges in the surrounding area.

History
At the point where the main road from Kimberley to Johannesburg bridges the river, the town Wolmaransstad was laid out in 1891 on the banks of the Makwasi River (San word for a type of wild spearmint). It took its name from JMA Wolmarans, a volksraad councilman.
