Witsand Beach in Witsand, Western Cape
South Africa’s Whale Nursery
Witsand Beach is a stunning Blue Flag beach located in the small coastal town of Witsand along the Cape Western Coast. Up until its blue flag status (2013) the beach had been somewhat of a well-kept secret, always beautifully maintained and a pleasure to relax on, it is now a popular choice with holidaymakers during December!
As its name implies, the beach offers 4 km of incredibly white sand. This pristine white sand is caused by a body of underground water responsible for leaching the red iron oxide coating from the sand, leaving it with its crisp white finish. Witsand Beach is also an extremely wide beach with plenty of space for beach walks and exploring the dunes. Under the right conditions, just the right amount of wind, Witsand’s dunes utter spooky rumbles when disturbed, a phenomenon known by locals as the famous ‘Brulsand’ or Roaring Sands. Be warned though that in early summer, the wind can get up in the late morning and make the beach quite unpleasant.
Outside of Blue Flag season, Witsand Beach is a famous whale watching spot. The whale watching is so special here that it has been nicknamed South Africa’s whale nursery, as the bay is known as an important nursery for the Southern Right Whale and because it has one of the most magnificent land-based whale viewing points.
Its location, close by to where the Breede River meets the Indian Ocean, offers safe swimming, fishing, snorkelling and many other water activities.
