The diggers' town of Windsorton lies on the banks of the Vaal River. It started life as the Hebron Mission. Then when diamonds were discovered in the river gravels and the place went to drink and brawls, it was renamed after the Windsor family, who owned the land.
The surroundings are typical of a diamond-rush-era, resembling a battlefield with thousands of holes and gravel dumps. Diggers still work here.
