The Ultimate Kloofing Experience

Suicide Gorge and Riviersonderend Hiking Trails are by far our countries most thrilling and exciting hiking trails among all the Cape Nature Reserves. Set in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, the entrance is found along the R321 between the towns of Grabouw and Villiersdorp, the hiking trail offers jaw-dropping scenery!

Riviersonderend Trail

Both routes are for experienced hikers and offers not only the beautiful landscape, but also exciting jumps off cliffs into rock pools – both are more of a thrilling combination of kloofing and swimming than just a hike! For those not looking for the extreme hiking experience, the Riviersonderend Trail is recommended. Although still quite lengthy and difficult, it only features a few compulsory jumps all of which are about 7 metres high. The route begins with and approximate hike of 4 km to the kloofing section with jumps, which is approximately 6 km. Thereafter hikers have a 3.5 km route back to the start. The full route takes approximately 7 to 8 hours so be prepared for a long day in the sun!

Suicide Gorge

For the brave and adventurous there is the Suicide Gorge Route, a kloofing hike only for very fit and very experienced hikers who do not have a fear of heights! Hikers have been known to refer to this route as their favourite in the world and a real treat for anyone who completes it! The full route, rounding off at 17 km, will take approximately 9 hours so hikers must begin early so they can return before dark and before 19h00 when the gate closes.

Suicide Gorge hiking trail begins with an 8.4 km hike into the mountains before the kloofing starts. The kloofing section of the hike may only be 1.3 km, but is extremely steep and entails a number of high jumps, the highest being an exhilarating 14 metres, and a waterfall slide! This section requires a lot of swimming so be prepared to be wet for some time. The final stretch home is 6.5 km’s and offers an opportunity to dry off and reflect on the amazing journey just experienced!
