The landmark known to the Sotho as Thaba Ntsho, meaning 'black mountain' looms over the Central Plains 64km east of Bloemfontein. Thaba Nchu, one of the oldest settlements in the Free State is situated below the famous Thaba Nchu mountain (place of execution) 65 km east of Bloemfontein.
Thaba Ntsho was the stronghold of the Rolong tribe, whose chief Moroko was an ally of the Voortrekkers. His grave is a historical monument.
The mountain was called Thaba Nchu by Europeans and a town of the same name was founded by Rev. James Archbell at its foot in 1833. A mission was established by the Rev. James Archbell of the Wesleyan Church. A trading centre developed around the church.
In 1873 Thaba Nchu became a municipality. It is the trading and administrative centre for a large Tswana population.
Summers in Thaba Nchu are warm, perfect for the outdoor activities this region offers. The rainy season is in summer, so the winters are cold, but bright and sunny.
