Signal Hill forms the rump of Lion’s Head sphinx and separates the suburbs of Green Point and Sea Point from the City Bowl.
Magnificient Views
With its magnificent views over the V & A Waterfront, Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island, Signal Hill is near the top of the list for things to do in Cape Town. It can be accessed by driving, or for the energetic walking, up Kloof Nek Road from the city and then taking a right at the top of the hill.
Picnic Dinners and Sundowners
Signal Hill is famous for its picnic dinners and sundowners at night when the view from its 350m summit of sunsets and glimmering lights are nothing short of spectacular.
Lover’s Lane
In the evenings Signal Hill is popular with young couples who are there to enjoy some quiet time in a romantic setting. In summer Table Mountain’s own lights add to this fairyland.
The Noon Gun
Be there at 12 noon and set your time to the Signal Hill guns. This very old Capetonian tradition still takes place every day, at Lion Battery, just below the mountain top. Originally, these guns were used to notify the public when a ship was in trouble.
Here also, signal flags were used to communicate weather conditions, as well as anchoring instructions, to ensure that visiting ships were pre-warned of any bad weather whilst they were docked in Cape Town's harbour.
