Strandfontein is a small seaside village along the Cape West Coast and is surrounded by Papendorp in the north and Doringbaai in the south. The village is only 60 km from Lambert’s Bay and was initially only a small beach resort for farmers of the Namaqualand, but now has evolved into quite the tourist destination for both locals and foreigners, particularly during flower season.
Strandfontein’s popularity as a holiday spot came about because the village has one of the most attractive and popular whale watching sites. The sandy cliffs provide excellent lookout points and the Southern Right Whales come close into the protective bay during calving season.
Long white sandy beaches that stretch for kilometres and the clear blue sea are huge attractions for both anglers and tourists looking for total relaxation, peace and tranquility. The fishing is excellent and if you have a permit, there is an abundance of crayfish and mussels in these waters. The beach is safe for small children with a tidal pool and playground to keep them entertained all day, plus Strandfontein has a wide variety of watersport activities available.
Strandfontein is the perfect destination for weekend getaways, long stay holidays and serves as a great stop over for visitors travelling to Namibia. Strandfontein and the surrounding area have plenty of self-catering units, B&B’s, Guesthouses and beach accommodation available.

History
Strandfontein, meaning ’beach fountain’ literally got its name from a fountain on the beach from which the earliest residents of the area, the San and the Khoisan used to drink. Richard Fryer owned the first brick house which later became the hotel. Unfortunately the hotel was demolished for newer developments, however a wine estate was established nearby and called Fryer’s Cove.
The grave of Fryer’s wife is just outside Strandfontein and has been declared a National Monument.
