Sweet Home

The Kayamandi Walking Tour is a superb way to discover the day-to-day life in Kayamadi, a township on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Kayamandi means “sweet home” in Xhosa and it seems to be just that!

Township Tours have become increasingly popular with visitors to our country who are looking for authentic encounters with our locals and the Kayamandi tour is a real “people’s route” which offers visitors a colourful slice of the locals’ unique lifestyle!

The tour, starting at Market Street, kicks off with a walk to catch a taxi to the township. From there your guide will take you on an insightful walking tour through Kayamandi, regarded as the second oldest township in the country. Wander off the beaten track through the paved streets and brick houses, to the narrow alleys between the shacks, demonstrating the contrasts presents in most townships.

Along the tour visitors will stop at several places. Cheerful greetings, happy children, township buzz and the smell of open cooking fires combine to heighten the senses. Engage with local artists and crafters, enjoy traditional food or taste the locally brewed beer and even though the homes you will be invited into are not are not quite like the ones we are used to, they are cheerful and inviting despite the never-ending issue of leaking roofs, mud and poverty. And we can all learn something from that!
