Greylings Pass is one of two Passes on the gravel R396 to Barkly East, via the quaint hamlet of Rossouw, from Dordrecht and Indwe. Although it is not one of the renowned Eight Passes of the Eastern Cape (Baster Voetpad, Carlisleshoekspruit, Lundins Nek, Otto du Plessis, Volunteershoek, Naudes Nek, Joubert’s and Barkly), it is, nonetheless, an enjoyable and scenic drive.

Distance 9.8 km
Gradient average 1:23
Gradient maximum 1:7
Summit 1953 m
Surface Gravel / Dirt Track

Greylings Pass is usually covered in snow during the winter months and at this time and when the roads are wet, a 4X4 vehicle is a must! Mostly the Pass is an easy drive, the gradient is gentle, and one doesn’t notice the climb or descent until about the 4 km mark where there is a series of steep drop-offs.

If travelling to the Pass from the south, you will first travel along Killian’s Pass and through the town of Rossouw – Greylings Pass begins approximately 3 km north of the town. From the north, Barkly East, turn right onto the R396 where the road loops and crosses over the R58. Just after the overpass bridge, the tar gives way to gravel. Stop and deflate your tyres at this point as you're going to be on gravel for a long time. Continue along this road for 33 km to reach the northern starting point of Greyling's Pass.

From the north the Greylings Pass begins in the neck of the mountains known as Swartnek. This nek is called Swartnek, for the distinctly black coloured rockstrata which is visible here. From ths point the views are incredible, one can virtually see for 40 km over mountain ridges – this is a must viewpoint stop, but it is often quite windy and cold at the viewpoint, so have warm clothing handy.

Greylings Pass ends at the crossing of the confluence of the Wasbankspruit and Wilgespruit rivers at the 9,8 km point, which is also the southern starting point.
