Umtentweni is a lovely holiday resort spread out along a 4km long stretch of beach, far from the maddening crowd yet close enough to shopping facilities, attractions and activities, being only 2km from Port Shepstone, 10 km from Shelly Beach and 17km from Margate.
The beach is protected, has life guards on duty in season and there is a safe tidal paddling pool for children.
The town lies at the mouth of the Mtentweni River and got its name from a species of grass which grows along its banks.
Umtentweni offers some excellent surfing and scuba diving with fishing and boating on the lagoon also being very popular. The town becomes a hive of activity and excitement when the annual Sardine Run takes place, bringing with them a variety of larger game fish.
