City of Flowers

Pietermaritzburg has many private and public gardens, filled with lush vegetation and flowers with seasonal blooms for every season of the year. It is no wonder it is known as the “City of Flowers” and that it is home to one of the most beautiful gardens in the country, the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Gardens.

The Gardens were established in 1874, with a focus to collect, display and promote the conservation of rare and endangered indigenous plants, and the cultivation of east coast grasslands. Today it is a Garden filled with charm and grandeur, offering visitors an exceptional day out with nature. It is famed for its long and striking, Plane Tree Avenue planted in 1908, at the end of which is a bell tower that houses a ship bell from the HMS Princess on which King George V crossed the channel in 1918. A section of the Garden was planted specifically to attract birds and as a result, the Garden now boasts over 151 species recorded.

The KZN National Botanical Gardens includes many themed gardens, allowing for a series of lovely walking trails and guided tours. Walks provide an opportunity to hear updated and reliable information on the flora and fauna that thrive in the Garden. They also connect visitors with Mother Nature.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy a delicious lunch at the Strelitzia Room Restaurant, pack a picnic lunch or enjoy a braai in the Gardens. The KZN National Botanical Gardens are one of only a few SANBI National Botanical Gardens that has braai facilities and offers an ideal recreational place for friends and families to relax and create fun–filled memories! Visitors can also join in the festivities at the Farmers Market every Saturday between 06h00 and 10h00.
